Observing and modeling the properties of small, primitive bodies in the solar system whose origins lie beyond the water ice frost line (~5 AU) provides critical insight into the formation of the first Solar System solids and establishes observational constraints for planetary system formation. The characteristics of comet dust provides evidence to validate the new, emerging picture of small body populations -- including comet families -- resulting from planetary migration in the early Solar System. Highlighted in this presentation are results of a SOFIA (+FORCAST) study of C/2012 K1 (Pan-STARRS) designed to ascertain coma dust properties of this dynamically new comet. Discussed are conclusions regarding dust composition as well as insight into the formation of comet dynamical families.
