Cool Stars 14 - Submitted Abstract # 26 This version created on 05 October 2006 X-ray properties of classical and weak-lined T Tauri stars in the Cha I dark cloud Jan Robrade, Hamburger Sternwarte J.H.M.M. Schmitt, Hamburger Sternwarte We present a deep XMM-Newton exposure of the northern-eastern fringe of the Chameleon I dark cloud, revisiting a region observed with ROSAT 15 years ago. We resolve several blended sources, detect many new ones and search for counterparts at infra-red and optical wavelength. Additionally we are able to investigate the X-ray properties of the brighter sources, including 15 known T Tauri stars. Using medium resolution X-ray spectra we determine X-ray brightness, coronal temperatures and emission measures and compare the properties of classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) with those of weak-line T Tauri stars. Furthermore, results from observations of several X-ray bright CTTS are adopted to study the contribution of possible X-ray generating mechanisms such as accretion shocks and magnetic activity. ----------------------------------
