Cool Stars 14 - Submitted Abstract # 69 This version created on 05 October 2006 The Abundances of oxygen and carbon in the solar photosphere Carlos Allende Prieto, University of Texas The most recent estimates of the solar photospheric abundances of oxygen and carbon are significantly smaller than the previously accepted values. These revised abundances are based on a three-dimensional hydrodynamical model of the solar surface, which reconciles estimates from multiple indicators available in the solar spectrum. Nonetheless, the updated abundances ruin the excellent agreement between models of the interior of the Sun and helioseismic measurements achieved with the older values. This talk will focus on what reasons we have to believe that the updated values are reliable, and what fundamental tests are yet to be done. ----------------------------------
