b. 6x Extended Source Working Database/Catalog Column Descriptions
The 2MASS 6x Extended Source Working Database/Catalog (6x-XSWDB/XSC) contains 389 columns of information per source entry (most of which is photometry). Because extended sources are much more complicated than point sources, it takes many more parameters to characterize them. Some parameters are required to describe the spatial extent of a source, and many more are required to characterize the photometry. In addition to a number of standard measures of photometry, the 6x-XSWDB/XSC also reports the magnitude as measured in a number of different fixed-size apertures. The columns are described in the tables below. We have separated the columns accordingto their basic function and utility.
Photometry algorithms and performance, "Large Aperture Photometry: Profile Fitting, Isophotal & Total Mags," are discussed in Section IV.5e. The information contained in the All-Sky Release Extended Source Catalog (XSC) FAQ and Primer, "How to Use the 2MASS XSC -- FAQ Sheet" (Section II.3b) is directly applicable to the 6x-XSWDB because 6x extended source processing used the same algorithms that were used for the Survey data.
Accessing the 6x-XSC
The 2MASS 6x-XSC is the subset of entries in the 6x-XSWDB that satisfy catalog selection criteria designed to produce a reliable list of extended source detections with only one measurement of objects detected multiple times. The 6x-XSC is not released as a separate table, like the All-Sky XSC, but is integrated into the 6x-XSWDB table. Entries in the 6x-XSWDB that constitute the 6x-XSC are identified by the cat column, and have a value of cat="1". Note: If you are accessing the 6x-XSC with the IRSA/GATOR catalog query engine, you must select sources with cat="1" and you must change the reliability range to "A-F (All)" in the "Reliability Limit" dialog box. This second step is necessary because GATOR defaults to rel="A" selection, and the catalog selection rules are different than the reliability scoring rules, resulting in the inclusion in the 6x-XSC of a small fraction of sources that have reliability scoring lower than "A". |

65 | rel | S | 1s | - | Reliability flag. Single character flag that is related to the
probability that the extraction is a valid detection of a near infrared
source on the sky at the time of the observation, and that the
source is resolved relative to the 2MASS point spread function.
This flag does not provide information about the quality of the position or flux measurement. For that, users should refer to e_score, g_score, vc, cc_flg and positional and photometric uncertainties. |
66 | e_score | L | 5.2f | - |
extended score: 1(extended) < e_score < 2(point-like). See the FAQ: Star-Galaxy Separation: How do the E and G-scores work? |
67 | g_score | L | 5.2f | - |
galaxy score: 1(extended) < g_score < 2(point-like). See the FAQ: Star-Galaxy Separation: How do the E and G-scores work? |
68 | vc | L | 2hd | - |
visual verification score for source. The visual classification score gives the source type for those sources examined "by eye": -2 = unknown -1 = no verification (i.e., not examined) 1 = galaxy 2 = non-extended (e.g., star, double, triple, artifact) See Visual Inspection of Extended Sources |
69 | cc_flg | S | 1s | - |
indicates artifact contamination and/or confusion. The contamination/confusion flag indicates whether the source's photometry and position may be affected by artifacts of, or confusion with, nearby bright stars. The flag consists of a single character string. Sources are tested for contamination and/or confusion in the order given below, and once a flag is applied to the source, testing is stopped in that band. The flag values indicate the source may be:
See Extended Source Confusion Flag |
70 | spos | S | 5d | - | Number of scans covering the position of this extraction. This is computed during the WDB merging process, using boundaries of each scan that are great-circle interpolations connecting the 3-band coverage corners. Since actual scans "wiggle" slightly in RA due to telescope motions, the actual number of coverages for extractions near scan edges can differ from spos. A null value in this column indicates that the source was not included in the source merging process because of low reliability, or proximity to a scan edge. |
71 | sdet | S | 5d | - | Total number of detections of this extraction in any band in this WDB table, in all scans covering its position, determined during the WDB merging processing. It is possible to have sdet > spos for extractions because extended sources may have in-scan duplicate extractions in the Atlas Image overlap regions, and near scan edges because of the approximations used to determine spos. A null value in this column indicates that the source was not included in the source merging process because of low reliability, or proximity to a scan edge. |
72 | gcntr | S | 5d | - | Unique identification number of the record in the Merged Extended Source Information table corresponding to the merged "group" containing this extraction. The merged "group" contains the combined position and brightness information for all extractions falling within ~5" of each other in the WDB. In confused cases where this extraction appears in more than one group (gcnf>1), the indicated group is the one to which this extraction lies closest. A null value in this column indicates that the source either that the position of this extraction was observed only once, or it was not included in the source merging process because of low reliability, or proximity to a scan edge. |
73 | gcnf | S | 1d | - | Merging confusion flag. Single digit flag that indicates
whether this extraction was associated with more than one group
during the WDB merging process.

356 | dist_edge_ns | L | %5d | arcsec | The distance from the source to the nearest North or South scan edge. The scan edge is defined by the great-circle interpolation between the 3-band coverage corners. The equatorial coordinates of the 3-band coverage corners are given in the Scan Information Table, referenced by the scan_key. The first character of the dist_edge_flg indicates to which edge the source is closer. |

The scan edge is defined by the great-circle interpolation between the 3-band coverage corners. The equatorial coordinates of the 3-band coverage corners are given in the Scan Information Table, referenced by the scan_key. The second character of the dist_edge_flg indicates to which edge the source is closer. |

extraction is part of the 2MASS 6x Extended Source Catalog (6x-XSC).
Extractions that are not part of the 6x-XSC may be additional measurements of high reliability sources that are in the Catalog, single or double stars, low SNR sources that did not meet the SNR selection requirements for the Catalog, or low reliability extractions of image artifacts. |
360 | pts_key | L | 10d | - |
key to 6x point source WDB record. If the source has point source data (i.e. it is not an LCSB), this field will be set to the key of the record in the 6x point source table containing the point source data. The 6x point source data will also have the same date, hemisphere, scan, id keys. |
