The SOFIA Science Center held a virtual workshop on June 22-24, 2020, the first of two workshops in the summer of 2020 to help create a plan and timeline, or a “roadmap,” for SOFIA’s instrument development, upgrades and capabilities during 2020-2025. These workshops are organized in response to a request from NASA to develop such a roadmap by September 1, 2020 after the termination of the HIRMES instrument development on April 1, 2020.
The first workshop in June focused on science cases for SOFIA and specifically on:
- A survey of science cases for new instruments/upgrades
- Generating feedback on upgrade plans and options
- Requesting and evaluating the support from the community for a phased approach
Invited talks focused on the needs of the astronomical community over a broad range of topics, and how upgrades of current instruments and/or future SOFIA instrumentation can meet these needs.
The second workshop , focused on instrument concepts and feasibilities, was held on July 27-29, 2020.
