I will discuss the physics behind the [CII] fine-structure far-infrared emission, and how to use [CII] measurements to study the physics of star formation, feedback, and the ISM. I will give some examples of the joint use of ALMA and SOFIA/Herschel observations to puzzle out the contribution from atomic gas to the [CII] emission, the thermal pressure in the ISM, the total amount of molecular gas at low metallicity, and other applications.
