NHSC Workshop: Herschel Open Time Cycle 2 Observation Planning Mini-Workshop

Friday, July 22, 2011

Caltech, Keith Spalding Building, 4th Floor

Pasadena, CA

BACKGROUND: ESA had announced an opportunity for a competition for open time observations with Herschel. This was the final opportunity to apply for observing time on Herschel. The AO document Policy and Procedures stated the HOTAC would be asked to allocate 3300 hrs of high priority (OT2p1) time and 3850 hours of lower-priority time (OT2p2) time in the upcoming call. We noted that the actual amount of observing time available depended on the lifetime of the cryogen, and this was known only to plus or minus 2 months. Thus, although this amount of time would likely be allocated, not all of the observations would be completed. OT2 represented a significant opportunity for far-IR and sub-mm astronomers to exploit this remarkable space telescope.

The NHSC held a mini-workshop on Friday, July 22, 2011, in Pasadena, California. The workshop was replanned to provide better phasing with the recently opened Announcement of Opportunity for OT2 observations on Herschel and to take into account participation size. The workshop was held in the Keith Spalding Building on the Caltech campus KS 410 from 9.30am to 5pm on July 22.
