CS14 Excursion - Mount Wilson Observatory

Mt. Wilson Observatory was the preeminent facility in the world in both stellar and solar studies during the first half of the twentieth century, and now modern instrumentation has enabled both the original superb telescopes and more-recently-built facilities to continue Mt. Wilson’s pioneering heritage. The tour will include the original telescopes (Snow Solar Telescope, 60-foot Solar Tower, 150-foot Solar Tower, Michelson 20-foot Stellar Interferometer, 60-inch Telescope, Hooker 100-inch Telescope), as well as the newer facilities (CHARA Array and the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer).

MWO is a privately owned and operated research institution. It is rich in history, but not in public amenities. The only wheelchair access is to the museum. There is no gift shop, and no food or drinks (except one water fountain) are available. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

The Observatory’s elevation is 5700 feet (1740 meters) above sea level. Temperatures are generally cooler than in the city by 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit (5 to 8 degrees Celsius). A jacket and good walking shoes are strongly recommended. Be sure to bring your camera!
